Ten Dervishes in One Blanket, and Two Kings Can’t Share a Kingdom

Saadi, the great poet and sage of the 13th century (7th century AH), wrote in his book Gulistan:

“Ten dervishes can sleep beneath a single blanket, but two kings cannot abide in one realm.”

In essence, this line captures a timeless truth: that simplicity and detachment from the world bring liberation and contentment, allowing people to coexist in harmony. In contrast, power and kingship cannot tolerate even two individuals in a single domain.

Meaning and Interpretation of Saadi’s Verse:
Here, Saadi illuminates a delicate yet profound reality about social and political life:
“Ten dervishes can sleep beneath one blanket” – that is, ten humble, unassuming souls can share a single, old village blanket and still find comfort and peace in each other’s company.
Yet, “two kings cannot share a single kingdom” – for even in the broadest land, two powerful rulers will inevitably clash, driven by jealousy, rivalry, and the ceaseless struggle for dominion.

Moral and Social Lesson:
This line reveals the stark contrast between the humility and simplicity of dervishes and the ambition and pride of kings. Through this vivid imagery, Saadi reminds us:
✅ Contentment and a simple heart foster peace and unity.
✅ Worldly ambition and greed squeeze out compassion and compromise, even in the widest spaces.

ده درویش در گلیمی بخسبند و دو پادشاه در اقلیمی نگنجند

سعدی علیه الرحمه شاعر و دانشمند بزرگ قرن سیزدهم میلادی– هفتم هجری) در کتاب گلستان، باب اول (در سیرت پادشاهان) فرموده است : ده درویش در گلیمی بخسبند و دو پادشاه در اقلیمی نگنجند

مفهوم این جمله بطور خلاصه این است که درویشی، و پایبند نبودن به دنیا برایتان رهائی و قناعت پیشگی به ارمغان می آورد و لذا انسان‌ها را در کنار هم قرار می‌دهد، در حالی که قدرت و سلطنت، وجود حتی دو نفر را در یک کشور برنمی‌تابد.

مفهوم و تفسیر جملۀ سعدی

در این جمله، سعدی به یک واقعیت ظریف و زیبا در مورد زندگی اجتماعی و سیاسی اشاره دارد

اینکه ده درویش در گلیمی بخسبند(بخوابند)  یعنی ده انسان بی ‌ادعا و درویش مسلک می‌توانند با قناعت و رضایت، در یک گلیم یا فرش دستباف پشمی سادۀ روستائی بخوابند و با هم بسازند و در آرامش زندگی کنند.
امّا در مقابل، «دو پادشاه در اقلیمی نگنجند» یعنی دو پادشاه یا دو فرد قدرتمند، حتی اگر یک کشور (اقلیم) پهناور در اختیارشان باشد، باز هم در کنار هم نمی‌گنجند و همیشه درگیر حسادت، رقابت، و جنگ قدرت می‌شوند.

پیام اخلاقی و اجتماعی
این جمله، تضادِ بین فروتنی و ساده‌زیستی (درویشی) و جاه‌طلبی و تکبر (سلطنت) را نشان می‌دهد. سعدی با زبان تصویرگرانه خود، به ما یادآوری می‌کند که:
✅ قناعت و دل ساده، آرامش و همزیستی می‌آورد.
✅ جاه‌ طلبی و حرص دنیا، حتی در بزرگ ‌ترین فضاها، جای سازش و محبت را تنگ می‌کند.
